Final Project: Work In Progress

For my final project i plan on focusing on the individual and the emotions we as people can convey without the use of spoken words. I feel this will go along well with the cause we've all been so passionate for all semester. I've attached some images below to show what I've been working on thus far and i wanted to get some feedback from you guys on what you think. Also, if you have the time, i have a few questions for you all:

First of all, do you think my topic is too broad and i need to narrow it down to one specific emotion or act in people? If so, which emotion would you suggest to focus on?

Secondly, do you think i should compile multiple photos together to tell a specific story about something or someone? I was thinking of doing this but with the final assignment being the narrative i feel it may be too repetitive....let me know what you think

Lastly, let me know what you think of these images. It would really help me with my project to get some feedback from you guys telling me what emotions are evoked in you when you see these images.

  1. Great photos Catherine!
As far as your questions go...
I think that it would be a good idea to group your photos into a couple of sets, going along with the idea of narration through successive images that we discussed for assignment #4. Then, looking at all your possible groups, I would brainstorm one word to describe the emotion that the image conveys. From there, you could choose a few that seem to you to be the strongest (you can even look for connections between the sets to bring together the topic even more). I think that will help you narrow down your approach.
If you feel like you are being to repetitive with the assignment #4, being what it is, you could always try to combine the set of images into one, much like the ones we saw in one of Dawn's PowerPoints...don't remember the photographer's name, but he was the one who did the 'For Andrea' collages.

    My favorite images are:
1.the third from last (man, woman, little girl),
2.the one with the men and the newspapers,
3.the guy with the rocking chair,
and 4. the one of the guy hitting the pinata.

Emotions that I equate with these images are:
    1. Affection, Love, Touch (not really an emotion, but it comes to mind :D)
    2. Companionship
    3. This one is a bit more difficult, but I think of Vastness, Loneliness, Thought?
    4. Youth or even Frustration

I hope this helps guide your research. I look forward to seeing the final product. :)

  2. I do not think your project is to broad, but you really have to make sure all your photos are conveying a strong emotion. Or some way to make sure your audience understands your objective. I wouldn’t narrow it down to one emotion and like the idea of portraying a couple, but be careful not to go overboard. Maybe do pick a couple and place them together.
If you want to group photos together and tell a story just make sure to really expand compared to what we do in class. I like the idea of playing with individual emotion. You have some very strong photos, and the link I would use to carry them together is just making sure each tells a strong narrative itself.
Also with the images, like in class, I would list some descriptive words with each one.

  3. I would not exactly narrow down your topic to only one emotion but would choose a few to focus on. I like that you are showing multiple emotions through the entire group of photographs though.
Looking at your photographs I felt the emotions, happiness, love , content and curiosity. I really liked the photograph of the guy with the bat, which for me evoked the feeling of frustration.

  4. Great comments from you peers - I agree that you don't necessarily need to narrow your focus too tightly, but you do need to have some idea in mind in terms of what you are hoping to get across. I also think you need to think about the distinction between your stated goal of "the emotions we convey as individuals without the use of spoken word" which would infer that we can understand/sense a specific emotion(s) being conveyed by the person(s) in each image (such as the man with cigar or the boy with pinata, or perhaps one of the family with child) - OR if you are talking about the emotional content that we as viewers read into an image based upon the look/feel of the photographs. These are two different (yet related) things.
